Why would you do that?

We had 10 minutes left in class so I let the students play on the computers. I sat down beside one student and started writing in my notebook. He looks over and asks me what I'm doing. "I'm writing a story in German, just for fun and to practice my German."
"Why would you do that?", he says. He just could not fathom the idea that I would be writing a story for fun and practice. We argued for about 5 minutes; me trying to convince him I was writing for fun and practice, he arguing that was crazy!

Let me guess...he was a mennonite?
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall...or better yet...be right there to tell him myself how I think you are cool because you love to read and learn and write.

I think your excellent example might stick with him and make a greater impression on him than you might ever know!

Maybe they could all just write something, get to share it with everyone and see how much fun they could have with that!

Maybe one child could write one sentence and then pass the paper on to the next one to add another sentence and so on and so on and see what a funny story they could come up with. Good clean fun!

Good to see you blogging! Hugs to the boys from OPA and OMA!

He wasn't Mennonite, but close! I was writing last night in our living room and Joshua asks the same question, "What are you doing?". I give the same reply and he screws up his face and says, "What? I would never do that just for fun!" So I said, "I know you wouldn't, but Jo and I read and write just for fun". I wonder if it has something to do with the school system: we force the kids to read and write boring stuff and then bribe them to try to force them to enjoy it!
